Verification Badges make sure that the account is the real, official account. And that it isnt a impersonator.
WARNING: Accounts can only be verified once. Your verified badge will never go away once verified.
Once a name has been verified, it can no longer be verified. This is for security reasons, to make sure that no one impersonates that verified account.
